New Scout Executive Selected

The Coronado Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America is proud to announce the selection of Donald R. Sheppard as the new Scout Executive and CEO to serve the volunteers and young people over 32 counties of North Central and Northwest Kansas.  Sheppard will assume the position on September 16, 2010 held previously by Stacy Huff who was promoted in July to Director of Development for the National Foundation of the Boy Scouts of America.

The ten member selection committee of local community leaders and board members led by Council President Carol Harfmann from Hays conducted a nationwide search and are excited about selecting Sheppard for this important assignment.  He has served the last three years with distinction as the Director of Development for the Simon Kenton Council in Columbus, Ohio where he started his career as a field executive.  He is an Eagle Scout and holds a MBA from the University of Dayton.  “We feel that Don exemplifies the values of Scouting and will give great leadership to delivering an incredible program to the young people in each of our communities.” said Harfmann.

Sheppard is quoted as saying “I am honored and humbled to serve such an incredible area for Scouting at a historic time for our organization.  We are launching into the second century of this great program and I could not imagine a better territory or group of volunteers to work with to advance the important mission of the Boy Scouts of America.  These communities have an incredible Scouting history and I am eager to work with our outstanding volunteers to make sure it has an even brighter future.  Scouting is more important now then ever and every child can benefit immensely from participating and every adult can enrich their life by volunteering with us.”

The Coronado Area Council is hosting its Centennial Celebration October 8-10 at the Bicentennial Center, Oakdale and Kenwood Parks, and the Salina Family YMCA in Salina, Kansas.  Over 5,000 are expected to converge on Centennial Camp with more than 100 activities for Scouts, volunteers, alumni, and those interested in Scouting to take part.  General admission passes for Saturday and tickets to the closing show featuring Danny Gokey and Jennette McCurdy are available to the public.  For more information, go to the October 8-10 dates on the council calendar on this website or select one of the many articles on the council home page.
