New Delivery Method for Cub Scout Meetings

The National BSA is rolling out a new Cub Scout program delivery method beginning this Fall.  Cub Scouts 2010 is similar to what many den leaders have been already doing.  Instead of monthly program themes, den and pack meetings are designed around the advancement programs of Tiger, Wolf, Bear, and Webelos handbooks.

What Changes?

While there have been changes in the delivery of the program, the foundational elements of the cub Scout program is not changing.  Themes that were craft or seasonal in nature have been replaces with the twelve core values of Cub Scouting.  The majority of the advancement will happen in the den meetings instead of at home although some requirements still need to be done as a family.  Share/Discover/Search are no longer a part of the Tiger Cub den meeting structure.

New Support Materials

Along with the new program delivery method comes changes in the support guides.  Some will be new but some of your old books are still relevant.  See the list below.

  • Den & Pack Meeting Resource Guide replace Program Helps - This book along with the handbook for that age level will cover almost all your den leaders' needs to run a meeting.  This book is not a one-year book like the Program Helps but can be used for all five years.
  • Cub Scout Leader Book - This guide has been modified to remove the duplication and to fit in the new format of the twelve core principles.  However, your old Cub Scout Leaders Book is still useful as there has been no change in content.
  • Webelos Leader Guide - Same as the Cub Scout Leader Book.  There is no content change just re-formatting and removal of duplication.  You can still use your old book.
  • How-To Book, Academic & Sports, Den and Pack Ceremonies - The only thing changed in these books is the cover to fit the new Cub Scouts 2010 format.  There are no content changes in these.

Training

If you have attended training either in person or online, you are still current.  For all untrained or new leaders, you will see changes to the Cub Scout Fast Start video and the Leader Position Specific Training to fit the new format.  Also, beginning in July, Position Specific Training will be online at the the BSA Online Learning Center.  This means you will be able to take all your training needs, Fast Start, Youth Protection, and Position Specific Training, online as well as in person.  Roundtables will also be re-formatted to follow the new delivery method.

Materials Available at the Scout Shop

The Scout Shop has ordered in an amply supply of Den and Pack Resource Guides so you can get your materials together for your new and existing leaders for this Fall.  The demand will be great so get your order in soon.

Studies has proved that this new delivery method increases retention of youth and retention of adult leaders.  Of the participants in the Pilot Study, 60% of the Den Leaders said the new program has increased their confidence, 80% said the resources makes the meeting preparation easier, 95% would recommend the new program to other Den Leaders, and 97% were satisfied with the resources provided.  Retention of youth went from 65% to 87% annually.

Be sure to get your pack prepared for Cub Scouts 2010!
