Cub and Webelos Resident Camp a Great Success at Camp Brown

As Scouting celebrates its 100th Anniversary, Brown Memorial Camp has been camping Scout in the Coronado Area Council for more than 80 years.  This summer has been one of our best.

Cub and Webelos Resident Camps were centered around three three-day weekends in June.  The theme, Frontier Days, was represented by Scouts being grouped into forts for camping and into historic trails and groups for programs.  All of the names used were actual parts of Kansas history and represented the Historic sites in Kansas.  Representing Fort Riley and the part played by our military was the Generals Mounted Color Guard.  The Cavalry Soldiers provided entertainment for the Scouts by performing and by teaching the Scouts about the history of the Horse Soldiers in Kansas.

There were 32 individual packs represented from all five districts in the Coronado Area Council. There were also units from the Heart of America and the Quivira Councils. In total there were 275 Scouts and an additional 191 leaders & parents attending camp this year.

Programs included archery, BB guns, fishing, hiking, leather working, campfire programs and a "Scout's Own Service".  Scouts earned advancements in these areas as well as in first aid, flag ceremonies, and in songs and skits.  Webelos had the opportunity to earn the Aquanaut, Forester, Readyman, Showman and Citizen pins.  The Summer Camp Staff also certified 14 people in CPR and First Aid as well as  on the BSA's Weather training. Four participants completed the BSA Lifeguard training.

New programs at  camp included a Second Year Webelos Program that is the beginning of a tradition at Camp Brown.  There is also a new bell at the top of the climbing tower that has provided additional incentives for Scouts to achieve there.  One of  the many highlights at camp was the fishing area.

While not every Scout caught a fish, a wide variety were caught. Some of the most unusual being the one Rainbow Trout and a large crawdad.  During the final session, one young Scout who had never been fishing before learned how to bait a hook and then caught four fish in about 20 minutes.

Over all Summer camp at Camp Brown was a great success with many Scouts learning new skills and making memories that will last a lifetime. A good time was had by all and many units have already made plans to return next year.

Get your reservations in early as the sessions will fill quickly. Online reservations will open soon for the 2011 camping season.  Stay tuned for more.
