TO:  Wheatland District Scout Leaders
FROM:  Paul Adams, District Chair

Dear Fellow Scouters,

Thanks to all of you in attendance at Roundtable.  Be sure to pass the word on that we will be meeting again on June 2, 7pm  to no later than 8:30pm.  Come in and meet our new District Executive, and bring a treat to share!  Upholding the tradition of our last meeting, we will have ice cream, but we need toppings and fixings to share!

I appreciate your efforts and tolerance as we are in a transition process within the district.  We are all volunteers doing the best we can for the boys we work with in Scouting.  My goal is to have the district leadership be responsive to the needs of the units and making the program the best we can.  The need for bright and able leaders is essential for our country and state.  I have been a volunteer for 29 years; I can think of no other program that does a better job of practical citizenship, leadership, and character development than the Boy Scouts.  Let's work together to grow the program and serve the youth of our part of Kansas.

QUICK QUESTIONS
Please shoot me an e-mail with your thoughts to the following questions.  If you can, please get back to me by Weds. afternoon (May 14).  Your responses will help us out at the District Committee meeting at Gutch's in Hays on the 14th.

a) Which theme for a Fall District Camporee do you prefer: Conservation or History?
b) Depending on the program design, the program could serve both Cubs and Boy Scouts.  Should it be a combined program?
b) The program for the Camporee could be focused on special awards or merit badges or a combination.  For example - Conservation could focus on Environmental Science or Soil and Water Conservation; OR the World Conservation Badge/Hornaday Award.  History: American Heritage or part of the Citizenship group OR Historic Trails Awards.  What combination would best ?
c) Do you have a best date for a camporee.
Thanks for your input!

TRAINING:
It was a crash course, but we started part 1 of Scoutmaster Training and also New Leader Essentials.  ON JUNE 2 we will start again at 6:30pm to 9pm to finish Scoutmaster Training AND have Job Specific Training for Cub Leaders.  Please send me a list of names needing training and, for Cub Leaders, positions needing training.  If possible please let me know by this coming Wednesday, May 14.

SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES

Flag Ceremony at Hays Larks Baseball Games
The games begin at 7 p.m. so the flag raising and opening ceremonies would begin about 6:45ish.  Scouts will be raising the flag, leading the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance, and the Star Spangled Banner from the field.  The games are free and are a lot of fun.  Some possible dates would be July 13-15, or July 25-27.  If interested please contact me, Paul Adams, padams@fhsu.edu and I will connect you with the person in charge of these.  The folks are looking to coordinate a couple of troops or packs.  This might be a great service event and summer outing!

Dear Scout Council/District Leaders,

We are contacting you to make you aware of an opportunity for your scouts in your council to participate in a unique living history event this summer.   This event actually came about because of a few 11-year old scouts' interest in living history!

Battalion Trek is organizing a re-enactment of one the longest military marches in US history.   We encourage you to visit our website at www.battaliontrek.com to learn more of the details.  Our board of directors believes this would be a wonderful opportunity for the scouts across America.

We would appreciate having this information posted on your calendars and any other help you can give us in making people aware of the Battalion Trek event.

Please call us with any questions.

Thank you,

Stephanie Warner
