 New Pawnee District Director

Stacy Huff, Scout Executive, is pleased to announce the hiring of Keith Thompson as District Director of the Pawnee District, effective February 7, 2008.  Keith comes to us from the Santa Fe Trail Council headquartered in Garden City, Kansas where he was a Senior District Executive serving two districts and where he began his Scouting career in 2001.  Keith has enjoyed success in achieving three Quality District and CSE Winner’s Circle Awards and was recognized as one of the Top 50 Unit Serving Executives in the Central Region for his 10.6% traditional membership growth in 2007.  He is a graduate of Kansas State University, a Vigil member of the Order of the Arrow, active Rotarian and enjoys golf, reading, and activities with his family.  Keith and his wife, Linda have two children, daughter Leah who is a student at Kansas State University, and son Kraig who is a high school junior and Life Scout.  Please welcome Keith and his family to the Coronado Area Council.

 

Catholic Diocese of Salina – Leader Training is February 16

A training for leaders that want to teach any of the Catholic emblems of faith offered to Cub Scouts, Boy

Scouts or Ventures will be held on Saturday, February 16 at the Scout Service Center in Salina. 

Brian Diller, from Beloit, is Chair of the Catholic Committee on Scouting for the Diocese of Salina and Fr. Jarett Konrade, Scout Chaplain for the Diocese of Salina, will help instruct along with a member of the Catholic Committee on Scouting from the Kansas City Diocese.  Read More>>>

BROWNSEA - National Youth Leader Training

The Coronado Area Council will offer Brownsea (National Youth Leader Training)  at Camp Brown on June 22 - 27.  Scouts that are at least 12 years of age or has completed the sixth grade and First Class rank can attend.  Ideally youth leaders should attend and those Scouts who will soon be leaders should attend.  See Iour websiite, www.coronadoscout.org/training   for registration and more information.   Read More>>>

 

 High Adventure for Boy Scouts

The Coronado Area Council 2009 Philmont Scout Ranch trek will arrive at Philmont on July 20 and depart from Philmont on August 1. This 14 day trek is available to all Boy Scouts who will be at least 14 years of age by January 1, 2009 and are First Class rank.  A total of 36 can attend.  Information is on line www.coronadoscout.org/camps       Click onto High Adventure.

 

2010 National Scout Jamboree is July 26 - August 4
Dream it, See it, LIve it !      
Jamboree Contingent is 33% filled.

Information is now available on our web site.   You can download a Scout flyer, a leader flyer, or an application to serve as one of the eight contingent leaders and information on how to serve on the Jamboree staff.   Request a jamboree promotion at a troop meeting with parents.  DVD's from the last Jamboree are also available for promotions.   Register soon, positions are filling up fast.  Twenty-four Boy Scouts have registered, leaving room for 48 more.  Read More at  www.coronadoscout.org/jamboree  

 

Tenderfoot - Second Class & First Class rank changes
effective January 1st 


The National Youth Protection Committee recommended additions to Boy Scout rank requirements that were approved and will become effective January 1, 2008. These changes will help us advance the importance of Youth Protection training beyond the initial Boy Scout joining requirements, and to keep youth informed and actively engaged in understanding the key elements of personal safety and protection.  The changes are ,,, Read More>>>

New Eagle Scout Applications Now Available

Beginning May 1st, only the new Eagle Scout application will be accepted.  Troop leaders are encouraged to get these new applications to Scouts working on their Eagle Scout award and who might turn in their application after May 1st.  The new application requires the Scout to list his service project and hours.  New applications are available from the Scout Service Center and on line.  The new application publication number  is 58-728A.  Download the new Eagle Scout application

BALOO Training  is for Cub Scout leaders whose pack wants to camp!!!!   This is an entry-level, introduction to outdoor training offered February 23rd at Camp Brown.

Wood Badge Course offered in 2008.

The Coronado Area Council will host a Wood Badge course in 2008 using Camp Brown the first weekend & Camp Hansen the second weekend of the course. Wood Badge is the most advanced training offered by the BSA focusing on leadership skills for adult leaders.  Read More>>> 

       

Start Planning Now for Cub Scout Camping this Spring and Summer

Are your Cub Scouts looking forward to camping?  There are a lot of camps to choose from:

Cub Scout Adventure Camps – held in April, one at Camp Hansen and two at Camp Brown.  This is a Saturday – Sunday overnight with lots of fun activities.  Information and registration forms are on our web site.  www.coronadoscout.org/camps

Camp Workdays – Camp Hansen is May 3 and Camp Brown is May 17.  Morning work projects are followed by afternoon activities.  Saturday lunch is provided.  Your pack can camp if you have a BALOO Trained leader attend.  Registrations available in March on our web site and also will be availalbe at Roundtable. 

Summer Leader Guidebook - Check out all the camps in late June and July that are available.  Webelos only camps, Cub Scout only camps, Fun with Son Overnights for all Cub Scouts, including Tiger Cubs – family members can attend.  Leader Guidebook is on line and is available upon request.  Contact the Scout Service Center. 

 

Ecology Trail at Camp Brown

A three mile hiking trail will be available at Camp Brown this spring.  Designed for Cub Scout.  Part of the trail has stops for ecology and conservation lessons.  A self-guided booklet will be available for Cub Scout leaders and there is a special patch for completing the requirements.  Schedule Camp Brown for a Saturday and tour the camp.  The booklet will be on the web site and available at the Scout Service Center and at Camp Brown.   See our website: www.coronadoscout.org/camps  for more information.

 

Order of the Arrow Elections

Boy Scout troops are encouraged to hold unit elections for new members for the Order of the Arrow.  If you have a Scout that has earned his First Class rank and has 15 nights of camping with your troop, including one long-term camp (at least five consecutive nights), he is eligible to be elected.  Troops may also nominate one leader for membership if at least one youth has been elected.  Do you need to know who to contact to schedule a troop unit election?  Check out the lodge web site.   www.coronadoscout.org/kidikidish

COME CHECK IT OUT!  We’ve expanded our book inventory and have several new books in stock.  We have books on weather, fossils, edible plants, bugs & slugs, magic, and a special one called “Boy Scouts of America – circa 1911” to name a few.

We also still have several items for Blue & Gold, many nice gifts for Eagle Scouts and many other items to choose from.   Our “flashing glasses” are really something to see!
