Paperless
in 2008

Leaders, parents, etc are encouraged to receive the council newsletter electronically by subscribing through MyCouncil.  You will need to create a personal profile which lets us know if you want to receive information on all BSA events or just some in your interest area, ie:  Cub Scout, Boy Scouts, Order of the Arrow, etc.    Click here to register...

Units begin qualifying for Centennial Quality Unit Award

Jimmy Stewart Good Citizenship Award

This award has been established by the James M. Stewart Museum Foundation with the consent and cooperation of the Boy Scouts of America, Penn Woods Council and the family of James M. Stewart.  The purpose of this award is to introduce Boy Scouts to the life of a great American, James Maitland Stewart.  Read More>>>

is July 26 - August 4
Dream it, See it, LIve it !

Information is now available on our web site.   You can download a Scout flyer, a leader flyer and information on how to serve on the Jamboree staff.   Request a jamboree promotion at a troop meeting with parents.  DVD's from the last Jamboree are also available for promotions.

Hunter Education Course offered at Camp Brown on February 16-17 

 This course is needed in order to purchase a hunting license.   Offered through the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, instructors are form Abilene.   Read More>>> 

 

Nation-wide Eagle Scout Search conducted by the National Council in 2008

As part of the current strategic plan of the BSA and in preparation for the Boy Scouts of America's 100th Anniversary, the National Council is conducting a national Eagle Scout search.  The goal to find Eagle Scouts and encourage them to be a resource to local Scout units, district activities, merit bade counselors, etc. The Coronado Area Council is also starting an Eagle Scout Associaiton.

Meet Dr. Hal Yocum at the Council Recognition Dinner on January 26th

as he introduces us to Lord Robert Baden-Powell of Gilwell and we learn of his story.  It is a story of ingenuity and courage and no small measure of insight into how boys mature into adults.  Dr. Yocum has spent many years gathering literature, photos and memorabilia about Baden-Powell.   Read More>>> 

Coronado Area Council is a Quality Council in 2008 along with Quivira and Three Rivers  Districts

Congratulations to the leaders in the unit, district and council committees that have earned Centennial Quality recognition by meeting established goals for success.  Part of that success is a new Cub Scout Pack in Wilson, KS where Cubbing has not been available for over three years.  19 of the 23 boys in the school joined the new pack.  As of January 2nd, Pawnee, Piconda and Wheatland Districts were very close to earning Centennial Quality Districts. 

Tenderfoot - Second Class & First Class rank changes
effective January 1st

 The National Youth Protection Committee recommended additions to Boy Scout rank requirements that were approved and will become effective January 1, 2008. These changes will help us advance the importance of Youth Protection training beyond the initial Boy Scout joining requirements, and keep youth informed and actively engaged in understanding the key elements of personal safety and protection.  The changes are ,,, Read More>>>


TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES 

BALOO Training 

BALOO Training  is for Cub Scout leaders whose pack wants to camp!!!!   This is an entry-level, introduction to outdoor training offered on February 9th in Hays and February 23rd at Camp Brown.

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Training teaches Tenderfoot to
First Class outdoor skills

This course is required for Scoutmasters Assistant Scoutmasters to complete Boy Scout Basic Leader Training and is recommended for Webelos Leaders and parents who attend campouts.

This course covers Tenderfoot to First Class Boy Scout Rank outdoor skills, it does not cover any Webelos.

Wood Badge Course offered in 2008
at both camps

The Coronado Area Council will host a Wood Badge course in 2008 using Camp Brown the first weekend & Camp Hansen the second weekend of the course. Wood Badge is the most advanced training offered in the BSA, focusing on leadership skills for adult leaders.  Read More>>> 

 

Order of the Arrow - Kidi Kidish Lodge     Winter Banquet

is January 5 at Camp Brown.   Activities are planned during the day with dinner at 6:00 pm.   The Lodge  web site has the current newsletter, and information on lodge and chapter officer training on January 6 and information on Arrowcorp5 the largest OA service project ever in five National Forests, etc.

Three Klondike Derbies held in January

Boy Scouts Troops and second year Webleos Dens (chech each district registration) have three derbies to choose from in January in Whealand, Pawnee and Quivira Districts.  Wheatlanf's Derby is in Osborne at the Scout Cabin on January 11-13.  Quivira & Pawnee will be held on January 18-20.   Pawnee's Derby is at Camp Brown and Quivira's Derby is at Milford Lake.  See district pages for more information.
